Introduction
The DSDM Plug-in for OpenUP is a process component for the Eclipse Process Framework (EPF). It is
designed to extend OpenUP - an open source version of the Unified Process developed by the EPF
project team.
The EPF family of processes are developed using EPF Composer - a method authoring tool also
developed as part of the EPF project. This means that all processes in the EPF family share a common
meta-model, making it easier to combine and re-use process elements such as role, products and tasks.
This meta-model is based on SPEM and UMA - the IBM Unified Method Architecture.
There are already a number of EPF plug-ins available. As well as the Open Unified Process, we have
DSDM, XP, Scrum, Agile Data Modeling and Agile Enterprise Architecture. Some of these (such as the
XP and Scrum plugins) are complete and standalone method libraries. Others (such as the DSDM and
Agile Data Modeling plugins) are designed to be used with OpenUP.
What's in the DSDM plug-in for OpenUP?
Essentially, the plug-in adds four roles from DSDM 4.2 to the OpenUP base content. These roles are:
These roles are integrated into the OpenUP process model and are associated with tasks and products.
The plug-in also includes some guidance materials intended to help encourage project teams to adopt
a more collaborative approach to software development. The basic idea is that projects work best
when the customer is inside the team rather than outside it. This is an approach that has long been
part of the DSDM philosophy and has become a standard feature of many agile processes in recent
years.
What do I need to do to start using the plug-in?
Like EPF Composer and OpenUP, the DSDM plug-in for OpenUP is distributed under the Eclipse Public
License, so there is no fee. You can download the plug-in from the downloads page on this site. The
current 0.9 release is compatible with OpenUP 0.9, available from www.eclipse.org/epf
You will need a copy of Eclipse Method Composer (EMC) if you want to edit the plug-in and integrate it
with your own processes. Please remember to respect the license terms when you do that.
